In The Heart of Provence - Tour description

This tour will make your discover the most representative, varied and beautiful part of France. Starting from the Côte d’Azur, through Provence, along the Alps, this tour will offer you thriving and diverse landscapes. You’ll start with a ride along the coast, from La Promenade des Anglais in Nice to the most famous Formula 1 circuit in Monaco. You will then lift yourself up to the Alps at 2800 meters altitude, riding on the Tour de France roads, along spectacular canyons, preceding the majestic geological jewel : the Verdon’s Canyon. Then you’ll enjoy the symbolic Provence, its traditional stone houses’ villages, lavender fields (during season) and its vineyards. You will stop by the major medieval and historic city of Avignon, before heading south to the sea, around Marseille and its famous “Calanques”. Riding through the Massif des Maures, picturesque roads will bring you to the typical and well-known Saint Tropez. You will end this tour, without leaving the Côte d’Azur shoreline, riding along the Massif de l’Estérel, the Corniche d’Or, Cannes and its sparkling Croisette, the old Antibes and its billionaires’ seaport, meeting up Nice and its Baie des Anges.

Spirit of this motorcycle tour

Before the French Riviera started attracting famous painters in the beginning of the 20th century and later on the all international “Jet Set”. It was an area of sleepy fishing villages, with little contact with the outside world. On this bike tour, you’ll get the opportunity to get into the golden years and the past of this region. Small roads, little villages, welcome to where “small is beautiful”.

Requirements:

  • All motorcycle renters are required to be minimum 25 years of age with two years of riding experience on a 600cc or larger motorcycle. They must have in their possession a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement from country or state of permanent residence.
  • A 500 USD refundable deposit will be required regarding the GPS rental.

Day 1 Nice

Landing in Nice, Côte d’Azur airport. Meeting up your guide and transfer to the hotel. Relax and get ready for tomorrow!

Day 2 Nice – Vence
(80 km / 50 mi)

Motorcycle pick up. Heading East, Côte d’Azur is welcoming you from Villefranche to Monaco. Ride along the blue Mediterranean on a warm shiny day. The sea shore offer stunning panoramas with cliffs plunging right into the light blue sea. The costal road from Nice to Monaco offers the best panoramas of the French Riviera. You will ride through famous places such as Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Beaulieu-Sur-Mer, and Èze. Here you will have a chance to see how the 1% live, the most expensive house in the world, the Villa La Fiorentina is located on the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula, asking price of $525 million. Arrival in Monaco, this microstate of 0.78 sq mi is famous fort its millionaires and its Formula One track and its casinos, did you know that citizens of Monaco are not allowed to gamble? Leaving the coast behind we are now heading to Saint-Paul-de-Vence one of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera. The dry stone buildings of Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the panorama offered by its hilly position had attracted famous french artists

Day 3 Vence – Barcelonnette

Heading North, lifting you up to 2800 meters high (9200 ft), on breathtaking roads from the Tour de France in the French Alps. Riding to the charming village of Barcelonnette surrounded by mountains which reach peaks of over 3000 m (9800 ft).
Day 4 Barcelonnette – Gréoux les Bains

We will ride South through the mountains, Col de la Cayolle and Castellane. Then we will ride along the Gorges du Verdon (Verdon Gorge) this river canyon up to 700 meters deep is considered to be one of Europe's most beautiful. The hilly route offers numerous outlooks to enjoy the view. Ending our daily ride in Gréoux-les-Bains.
Day 5 Gréoux les bains – Avignon

You are in the heart of Provence! Up to the Mont Ventoux, this 1910 meters (6270 ft) high mountain has become legendary as the scene of one of the most grueling climbs in the Tour de France bicycle race. It is the largest mountain in the region and has been nicknamed the "Beast of Provence", the "Giant of Provence", or "The Bald Mountain". Discovering the charming villages of Lubéron, and ending our daily ride in the medieval city of Avignon. Its historic centre, which includes the Palais des Papes, the cathedral, and the Pont d'Avignon, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The medieval monuments and the annual Festival d'Avignon have helped to make the town a major centre for tourism.
Day 6 “Day-off” in Avignon

For those who don’t want to relax or discover the Pope’s City, here are other possible rides : discovering the Lubéron as described in the best selling novel by Peter Mayle "A Year in Provence" , visiting the medieval city of Gordes and Roussillon villages, or the Sénanque Abbey.

Day 7 Avignon - Cassis

Daily ride from Avignon to the coastal town of Cassis.

Day 8 Cassis – St Tropez
(138 km / 86 mi)
Back on our motorcycles, on the scenic ridge line through the Massif des Maures reaching the seaside resort of Saint Tropez.
Day 9 St Tropez - Nice (90 km / 56 mi)  It’s already our last riding day, heading East on the beautiful coastal road enjoying a peaceful ride along the sea. Red cliffs plunging into the light blue sea, a real western landscape. St Raphaël, Agay, the Corniche d’Or, Cannes famous for its Croisette and its annual film festival and the old town of Antibes. During your ride on the Croisette in Cannes you can enjoy a view of the magnificient building of the seafront on your left or the Mediterranean sea on your right with the Lérins Islands. Back in Nice where we will drop off the motorcycles before enjoying a last evening in the old town.
