Looking for Route 66 - Tour description
The Route 66? It took it less than 60 years to be laid out, become a legend and be forgotten. Before its rebirth which made it become part of History… The first road connecting East and West, it welcomed refugees from the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression in the 30s. After Pearl Harbor, hundreds of thousands of men crossed it. Once the war was over, they took Route 66 to go on vacation or to move to California. Its drive-ins, gas stations, fast food restaurants and motels invented a model of civilization that continues to excite people’s imagination (Excerpt from Route 66, written by Jean-Pierre Reymond, published by SPE/ Barthelemy)..
Make the myth a reality
Spirit of this motorcycle tour
It fosters imagination and has been the dream of bikers from all around the world. And yet at first, Route 66 was just a commercial route designed to assist human and commercial exchanges between the East and West of the USA. The dramas in its history, the human and family destinies, the legends of its travelers (Jack Kerouac) make it a legendary route you shouldn’t miss! But it is not really a touristic route. It won’t take you to the big national parks in the American West, but rather through the “American heartland” that is so touching, so endearing. We will cross it together on a “semi-guided tour”. Every evening, you will receive the road map and the road book for the next day so you can study the route. Your guide will be available to give you information and handle your luggage, and will be there if you need him, but you will be riding alone or in a small group and will move along at your own pace along this legendary road. That way, Route 66 will become “your Sixty-Six” forever!

Tour Itinerary
Day | Places | Description |
---|---|---|
Day 1 | Chicago, Illinois | Flight to Chicago, Illinois |
Day 2 et Day 3 | Free time in Chicago | Before we start our trip, you will have a full day to discover Chicago, the starting point of Route 66. Located on Lake Michigan, the 6th largest body of fresh water in the world, this modern city will delight you by night & by day! |
Day 4 | Bloomington, Illinois (210 km / 130 mi) | We will pick up our bikes in Elgin and set off on our first miles along Route 66. Stop in Joliet (where the Blues Brothers movie starts and finishes), the first typical diners and the first service stations. |
Day 5 | St. Louis, Missouri (268 km / 167 mi) | Funk’s Grove Pure Maple Syrup has been making maple syrup since 1891; Dixie Truckers Home in McLean, a legendary truck stop open since 1928; Lincoln, the President’s namesake… This fairly short trip takes us to Saint Louis on the Illinois–Missouri border. |
Day 6 | Rolla, Missouri (170 km / 106 mi) | Another short trip in order to enjoy the morning in Saint Louis, the world capital of the blues. Villa Ridge, Stanton (Jesse James Museum), Cuba, St. James and Johnnie’s Bar (1929)… there are so many reasons to stop along this 3rd leg of the trip. |
Day 7 | Joplin, Missouri (296 km / 184 mi) | Lebanon, Marshfield, Springfield, Carthage, Joplin… you are on the authentic Route 66, heading due West! |
Day 8 | Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (347 km / 216 mi) | From Kansas to Oklahoma, 347 km/216 miles of legendary roads. At a restaurant in Baxter Springs, Jesse James and his men had lunch one fine day in 1876. Further on, in Commerce, the saga of Bonnie & Clyde came to an end… The first oil well was discovered in Chelsea. Yes, the USA has its own history and you will learn about it on Route 66! |
Day 9 | Amarillo, Texas (413 km / 257 mi) | You are now in Texas and you have even more reasons to stop off along your route, but today we will only talk about the Big Texas Steak Ranch, where tonight’s dinner will be on the house if you can finish your entire 2-kg/72-oz steak in less than one hour. |
Day 10 | Tucumcari, New Mexico (162 km / 100 mi) | On the way to New Mexico. The landscape changes. You are in the West! The legend says that two Apache warriors, Tokom and Kari, fought for the hand of Chief Wabtomak’s daughter. They both perished and gave their name to Tucumcari Mountain, which overlooks the city. |
Day 11 | Santa Fe, New Mexico (266 km / 165 mi) | Today we will drive along what may be the most beautiful stretch of road on our trip to Santa Fe, where we will spend 2 nights. Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico. It is an amazing city, with no skyscrapers and houses all built in the adobe village style of the Pueblo Indians. |
Day 12 | Santa Fe | free day in Santa Fe |
Day 13 | Gallup, New Mexico (320 km / 199 mi) | El Rancho Hotel in Gallup is our destination, and Gallup is the capital of all the American Indian Nations. It is a center of commerce and exchanges for Indian crafts and probably the ideal place to buy Christmas presents! |
Day 15 | Kingman, Arizona (238 km / 148 mi) | If you have never been there before, this is the opportunity to see the Grand Canyon or another national park. There are plenty of amazing sites in the region! |
Day 16 | Victorville, California (377 km / 234 mi) | Today you will ride along Route 66 as you have always imagined it. Williams and Seligman are on your route. Your guide will introduce you to the interesting people who made the road’s history and have contributed to its renaissance. |
Day 17 | Victorville, California (377 km / 234 mi) | Get ready for Oatman Pass, the most authentic stretch of Route 66, with its ghost town-mine and wild donkeys in the streets. Then comes Laughlin and the symbolic crossing of the Colorado, then Amboy and the famous Roy’s Cafe. A stop at Baghdad Café is a must before coming to Barstow, another legendary town on Route 66. |
Day 18 | Los Angeles, California (134 km / 83 mi) | You have to be careful trying to get into Los Angeles on Route 66 rather than on the freeways – it has to be handled by specialists… Ask you guide and he will take you to the end of your route: the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica. You did it; it is yours. Forevermore you are part of the legend and you can finally say, “I did it!” |
Day 19 | Los Angeles | Free day in Los Angeles |
Day 20 et Day 21 | Los Angeles/Paris | Time to say goodbye. See you soon on another West Forever guided motorcycle tour! |
