Big Five - Tour description

We call this the “Big Five” tour in reference to 5 wild animals: the lion, the leopard, the elephant, the rhinoceros and the buffalo, which you will be able to see during the safaris along the way. But before you head out on the trails of the 3 biggest animal parks in South Africa, Hluhluwe, Kruger and Pilanesberg, the “Big Five” will take you through a wide variety of scenery on roads that will delight all bikers, from the roads of Zululand to the Panorama Route along Kruger Park, not to mention the amazing MR1 which cross Swaziland, a Kingdom worthy of Indiana Jones. The best itinerary to discover Africa’s wildlife before spending the last two days hanging out in Sun City, the “Las Vegas of South Africa”. An entire program for you to enjoy without moderation!

... Roaring with pleasure!

Tour Itinerary

DayPlacesDescription
Day 1 Johannesburg Johannesburg and the residential neighborhood of Sandton will be the point of departure and arrival for this tour. There is just a one-hour time difference, so you will be in shape for this tour, which starts the next day with a beautiful ride.
Day 2 Vryheid (380 km/236 miles) We will pick up the bikes and head south on the R23 highway across immense plains that will remind you of the American West. This is where the Boer War took place. You can get used to driving on the left before you take the small, winding roads of Zululand.
Day 3 Hluhluwe (310 km/193 miles) We will cross Kwazulu-Natal on the R34 highway, a road steeped in history, with a lunch stop in Shakaland, the former capital of the Zulu kingdom. We will then head out for the Hluhluwe Nature Reserve (pronounced Shloushlou he), the oldest reserve in Africa, on the N2 highway along the Indian Ocean.
Day 4 St Lucia (180 km/112 miles) After a morning safari, we will leave for a magnificent loop to the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park, listed as a World Heritage site, with a cruise on the lagoon to look for the crocodiles and hippopotamuses that live there. A short trip but on that is full of dramatic natural emotions.
Day J5 Kingdom of Swaziland (300 km/186 miles) Today’s schedule takes us to Swaziland and its unique atmosphere. To reach the heart of this peaceful little Kingdom, we will ride through capital, Mbabane, on our way to a Lodge tucked away in a pine forest. But before that, we will stop off at Jonzini Lake for a lunch-cruise.
Day 6 Pigg’s Peak (250 km/155 miles) We continue with our discovery of Swaziland off the beaten trail, heading north on a road with a roller coaster layout, all ups and downs and curves before crossing the spectacular Komati Dam on the MR1 highway and finishing the day at a hotel-casino with a Las Vegas feel. Place your bets!
Day 7 Kruger Park (240 km/149 miles) Destination: world-famous Kruger Park. To get there, we will take the Panorama Route, the most beautiful Scenic Road of Mpumalanga, which takes us to Sabie and Hazyview, our base, for a sunset safari to look for the Big Five: the lion, the leopard, the elephant, the rhinoceros and the buffalo.
Day 8 Hazyview (200 km/124 miles) Free day. An opportunity for you to discover the surprising landscapes of Blyde River Canyon at your own pace. Start with the Escarpment Route, with a mandatory stop at God’s Window before carrying on to Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Sisters, ending at Pilgrim’s Rest. All these points of interest give this corner of South Africa its postcard image.
Day 9 Tzaneen (260 km/162 miles) An early-morning departure heading north toward Limpopo. The landscape changes, with luxuriant tropical vegetation and a picnic in the shade of the Big 5 Trees before coming to the Coach House, a former mail relay station perched at the top of a hill covered with Actinidias, the bush that kiwis grow on (for Scrabble players).
Day 10 Sun City (420 km/261 miles) A marathon day to reach Sun City. Located on the edge of Pilanesberg Reserve, which is also home to the Big Five, this wild town is something straight out of the Jungle Book. The casinos have forged this amazing spot’s reputation. It is like Las Vegas bordered by ancient volcanoes.
Day 11 Sun City (libre) The bikes will take a rest today because the roads around Sun City do not have a layout that is worth riding too far on. The perfect day is organized around the white sand lagoon, with a wide range of activities, from golf (a PGA course) to an elephant ride in Pilanesberg Park. The Big Five are also part of the spectacular scenery you can discover by quad, 4x4 or hot air balloon (options).
Day 12 Johannesburg (160 km/100 miles) Back to Johannesburg, just a 2-hour drive for the last leg of the trip to Sandton, via an African market and the gorgeous road overlooking the lake at Hartbeespoort Dam. We will take the bikes back to the dealership and the afternoon is free time for shopping.
Day 13 Departure After breakfast, we have organized a visit to the township of Soweto, the home of all the great protest movements that brought an end to apartheid and enabled Nelson Mandela to be elected President of South Africa in 1994. Bye bye on the end of the day! See you soon on another West Forever guided motorcycle tour!
